Cash from ash as bonfire charities announced

PRESS RELEASE

Organisers of a massive fundraising event in Torrington have just announced who they’ll be raising money for this year.

The Torrington Cavaliers have named both the Children’s Hospice South West and the North Devon Cancer Care Centre Trust as their main ‘bonfire’ beneficiaries. The news comes as organisers continue to build their latest and biggest creation, ahead of the charity burn over the August bank holiday weekend.

Cavalier Chairman, Chris Stacey, said: “In 2005, we built a half sized replica of HMS Victory, which was burnt to the ground in front of 10,000 people. More than £72,000 was raised, with two charities each getting an £18,000 cheque, and the remaining money being shared between 50 other local charities and good causes. This year, we’re proud to support the CHSW and the NDCCCT, in what we hope will be an even bigger and better event. We’ve spent the last two years on the bonfire’s planning and construction, so it really will be an occasion not to miss!”

To celebrate the Cavaliers’ 40th anniversary this year, organisers are creating a bonfire which will be a medieval replica of the Great Torrington Castle. It’s being built on Torrington common and will be 100 foot wide and nearly 50 foot tall when complete.

Ian Roome, Community Fundraiser at Little Bridge House children’s hospice said, "We are all delighted that the Torrington Cavaliers have chosen Children’s Hospice South West to be one of the beneficiaries from the income that this event will raise. The money will help us continue give vital care and support to children and their families who are living with life-limiting conditions. It will ensure that we continue to make the most of short and precious lives."

Jennifer Bonetta, Chairman of the North Devon Cancer Care Centre Trust, said: “The Torrington Cavaliers’ bonfires are internationally famous and always an incredible event. This year, North Devon Cancer Care will be looking to replace our transport for carrying radiotherapy patients to Exeter with a new vehicle. The Cavaliers’ fundraising efforts will be a tremendous boost in helping us to reach our goal, and we are very grateful for their support.”

The Great Torrington Castle bonfire and firework spectacular is being held on Saturday 28 August on Torrington common. Tickets will be on sale in May, with more information on the Cavaliers’ website www.torrington-cavaliers.co.uk

Meanwhile, to coincide with their anniversary, the Cavaliers are also launching a book, detailing their 40-year history. It has been written by local author Bob Brewer, with a launch party being held at the Plough Arts Centre at 10am on Saturday 3 April.
