MayFair Day 2005

Thursday 5th of May was a very special day for the Cavaliers. It was the biggest entertainment program we have done.

The entertainers sang to the crowd in the morning with their sea shanties and naval songs to a large crowd who were singing along merrily. In the background the Cavalier / bonfire builders were behind the scenes practicing for the last time their part to be played in the afternoon.

After lunch, and a couple of jars I`m sure the entertainers and the bonfire builders met at the Globe for a final rehearsal and briefing and before the off, a photo shoot.

At 3pm the entertainers marched into the square led by Nelson and took their place on the stage. First to sing and dance were the young girls, who were family and friends of the Cavaliers.

Then the entertainers took over with their sea shanties and naval songs.

Later into the show came the Bonfire builders, they marched into the square and on to the stage to perform what they had been practising for 8 weeks, the HORNPIPE.

There were a few other characters involved, Captain Dick and his sidekick Dave. The mermaid and the gay soldier and of course from Spain the love maurice dancer (maurice Cockwill).

As the show and the songs moved on and the entertainers started to sing "Fire down below" a few of the dancers were at the front of the stage threatening the crowd with buckets of water in the fire buckets. Only one bucket was full of water and this poor unsuspecting member of the Cavaliers took a drenching from a delighted Chris Tattersall!!

A few more songs and then Judge Al Mitchell took the stage for the Cavalier court. He sent the heavys out to find Mike Ferry AKA DIY Mike who was charged for causing nagging by wives at home who wanted home improvements done, Anne Tattersall who was charged with being in the papers too much much to the annoyance of the bonfire project leader Dick Matthews and finally Ian Mills, our local dentist who was charged with giving people in the town too shiny teeth. All 3 were found guilty and sentenced to walking the plank.
