Gt Torrington Cavaliers vs Weare Gifford Cricket Trophy - 2009

It was like a plot from the film The Dirty Dozen. Aloof, upright, well respected and much decorated from previous cricket skirmishes, Bernie Wittram had to muster together a rag tag assortment of physically challenged players to take on the might of Weare Gifford. A true Band of Brothers.

Anxious to defend their title, the holders of the magnificent Challenge Trophy, The Cavaliers, put in some long, hard training in the nets and the Cyder Presse. Tactics were discussed, team selections mulled over and training wounds compared. Luckily Andy Morris (foot), Heath Pettifer (calf) and Paul Tilbury (rubber legs) were all passed as fit to play by the team physio, Alex.

A concentrated training schedule was implemented. This involved Nick Hi Vis for ball catching, ball direction for Daz and a sign up to Slimming World for Stace the Ace, and ensured that the players were as well prepared as they could be to meet the daunting challenge ahead.

Colonel Wittram and his privates stood shoulder to shoulder as the toss was made and The Cavaliers opted to bat first in what was to be a high scoring innings. 149 in the allotted overs and we found ourselves in the food marquee and beer tent to reflect on a magnificent battling batting display. It was soon time to retake the battlefield. Early wickets were captured and everyone played their part in what became a convincing Cavalier victory.

Battle honours (Cavalier Man of the Match) was awarded by our Captain to that rumbling old war horse Biffo Copp and a special gallantry medal to Paul Copp, although he was unable to walk the 5 yards to collect it.

Once again the reception we got at Weare Gifford was superb. The evening'€™s entertainment with Ring of Fire (what a talented family the Collinghams are!) and the refreshments that seemed to keep going all night ensured that we had a day and night to remember. This is a fixture that is now special in The Cavaliers€™ diary.

Thank you again, Weare Gifford. Chris Stacey – Chairman, Gt. Torrington Cavaliers.
